DESIGN session 1

In the first design class, Giles helped us step by step to develop our design ideas. Firstly, we use trace paper to line the art’s shape and flip the paper and did it again to make it symmetric. Secondly, added head, hands and legs to make it become a garment. Finally, used the same shape but tried to develop it, made it bigger, longer, shorter and repeat it.

When I was learned design in the past, I learned we need to develop through making it bigger or opposite. However, I never try to make it becomes symmetric and step by step to do those processes. Through this process, I can more organize the idea in my brain and avoid situation that does not know how to explore my development. I think this process is important because we can not directly use an image or art to design a dress, it will make your design boring and not deep enough. This process lets us systematically go deep into research and develop new contours.

When I was doing design homework this week, the feeling that I didn’t know what I was doing has become less than before. In the past, I often felt that my design stopped at a very superficial level. I want to go deep but I don’t know how to do it or I can’t sort out a complete process. I can understand others work and how they develop them but I can not really know how to do that. Of cause, one class would not make me become a genius but it can make me clearly know how can I practice.
